If you spend any time at the local skate parks in St. Pete, you start to recognize the regulars. But there’s one rider who’s been turning heads lately, not just for his skills, but for the sheer determination packed into his four-foot-something frame.
Meet Antavius. He’s eight years old, a lifelong St. Pete local, and quite possibly the most confident kid on two wheels.
I walking around the skate park when I heard a polite but eager voice: "Excuse me, can you take a picture of me doing a trick?"
I looked down to see Antavius gripping his handlebars, eyes locked on the transition. Most kids his age are still figuring out how to balance, but Antavius wasn't looking for a participation trophy—he wanted the shot. I dialed in my settings, he dropped in, and he nailed it.
After he landed, I had to know: what gets an eight-year-old this hooked on BMX?
"My brother," he said simply.
It’s the classic story of "anything you can do, I can do better." Seeing his older brother ride sparked a fire that hasn't gone out. While other kids are glued to tablets, Antavius is studying lines and watching his brother’s every move to level up his own game.
Antavius has lived in St. Petersburg his whole life, and he’s lucky enough to call the pavement his backyard. When I asked him how often he gets out to ride, he grinned.
-
Proximity: He lives just 3 minutes away from the park.
-
Consistency: He’s there every single day.
-
Dedication: Rain or shine, if the gates are open, Antavius is rolling.
St. Pete has always had a vibrant skate and bike culture, but seeing the next generation take it over with such politeness and passion is something special. Antavius isn't just a kid on a bike; he's a reminder that talent starts with a little bit of inspiration from family and a whole lot of "showing up."
Keep an eye out for this kid. With a three-minute commute and that kind of drive, he’s going to be the one the younger kids are asking for tips from before we know it.
